Early indications are mechanical failure. So I have been told. More than happy to be corrected.

ATSB report has been released:
http://atsb.gov.au/publications/investi ... 3-016.aspx

"The ATSB found that when the pilot turned to the right to commence the orbit, the helicopter was exposed to a crosswind from the left while at an airspeed around the 30 kt threshold value for susceptibility to loss of tail rotor effectiveness (LTE), precipitating an unanticipated right yaw and temporary loss of control. The pilot regained sufficient control for a forced landing, but he did not use full left pedal as recommended for loss of tail rotor effectiveness, resulting in a likely delay in recovery."

Wow, really? So 9 and 10 will somehow do a deal with 7 to get their helicopter footage (minus the exclusives?)
That must be a bit of a blow for Helewest who leased 9 and 10 their choppers.

Based on the last known registrations I have for the Channel 9 and Channel 10 helicopters, it looks like 9's, for the moment, is still in service. Whilst 10's has indeed been returned and possibly re-tasked, with fairly regular flights out of Jandakot.

Channel 9 - http://flightaware.com/live/flight/VHBPB - still operating out of Dianella.
Channel 10 - http://flightaware.com/live/flight/VHRPK - now operating out of Jandakot instead of Dianella.

9 Haven't used the R44 for nearly two years and have been using a Jet Ranger.
