Getting a frequency database started

Hi Folks.

One thing I've love here on the WARSUG forum is that we have a wealth of knowledge about the radio-using services out there and what's good to listen to and how (and why!). What I've found though while programming a new scanner for the first time is that we have some excellent frequency lists for some services but finding the frequencies for others takes a bit of digging.

So, I had an idea - A searchable frequency database for WARSUG.

I'm opening the idea up for discussion. Is it something we need? If yes, how might we go about doing it?

(The forum itself runs on Linux under Apache 2, PHP 5 and MySQL and I'd prefer if any software suggested can run under that environment)

I think it would be a great idea, and the best solution I can think of is a Wiki style format.
The main Wiki page could consist of groups, eg

Police
FESA
Ambo
Security
etc

Then each page would contain the frequencies. It could be open for all to edit, or restricted to board moderators. As new frequencies are found, they could be added to an announcement thread and each mod could add it to the Wiki then delete the post or something along those lines.

A similar system to the Wiki system that whirlpool.net.au uses (although theirs is fully custom built from the ground up) - there are quite a few out of the box php/mysql wiki packages available to download, possibly even in the debian repos.

Great idea,

This may seem oddly simple but this is what i do with all my frequencies.
- but everyone submits their frequencies
- there all added into excel,
and then you can save it to disk and when you want something you just Ctrl+F it. (It's what i do and works)

Something like a Wiki would be nice, but to be honest making it user editable is asking for trouble. There will always be one idiot out there to wreak it.

Possibly make it user editable to start it up then lock it down to moderator submissions only (after advise of additions/subtractions from board members)?
