Earthquake in Melbourne

Post by meg »

No news yet on magnitude, and it doesn't sound like there's been any particular damage - but what an odd thing to happen there!

Reports started springing up about 20 mins ago.

edit: magnitude 4.7

there was also a 5.1 this morning off the north coast of WA

Mag 4.6 8km deep

No Significant damage reported

From the comments on the ABC story seems like it was felt and heard over a wide area. Have a mate in Geelong who felt it as well.

EDIT: Two 3.1 surface After shocks. http://www.ga.gov.au/earthquakes/

Still only minor damage :D

I was in Melbourne when the quake hit. A slight little shake and that was it. Wasn't really anything. Some other people I talked to who were at Etihad Stadium (Telstra Dome) said they didn't feel anything

Don't live far from there, didn't feel a thing. Not saying it didn't hit there, reports of people on the Eastern / Southern sides of Geelong have confirmed they felt it. Would of been an experience if I did!! It's not everyday an earthquake comes to Victoria...

Although earthquakes are rare, they are not that uncommon in Victoria. The area where the current series of earthquakes have occured (there have been two 4.5 earthquakes in the last couple of weeks plus after shocks) is known to have at least one earthquake a year. There is talk that a much larger earthquake is possible in this area, in the near future, possibly 6.0 or greater.
