Christmas present to me! UBC93XLT.

Brand new to scanners so here goes!

Decided to get a hand held for my present this year (mostly for fire traffic use. Like others here I am a vollie.) and after much research (especially on WASUG, thanks guys.) settled on the Uniden UBC93XLT. Very nice, compact unit.

Out here at Bullsbrook I fully expected not to get much on the units own aerial but was not epecting the deathly silence I got. Three days of manual reading and fiddling, nothing. Was I doing something wrong, or was I just too far from anything?

Today one more fiddle and guess what the unit crackled into life with the main channel heard being Perth approach at the airport nice and clear, (123.600, big thanks to whoever put those airport and FESA lists up!)

So now for the big learning curve to sus out all of these buttons and what they do! At least I now know the unit is ok and so am I. I will be purcasing a bigger and better aerial to attach to the house though, any suggestions appreciated.

:D

Welcome WadeH :)

I've got the MobileOne SCBASE antenna and it works well from Mt Helena - I suspect it should do well in Bullsbrook too. I think one of the other members (Tyranus) has the same one also.

Get it up as high as possible, I just have it hanging from a tree that's conveniently near the window :)

What meg said. You should hear Pearce activity pretty sweet with no antenna :-)

i have the older version (92xlt)
i would just suggest placing the frequencies in ascending order. It allows the scanner to scan through them quicker then if they were all over the place.

Yeah Pearce traffic should be clear as a bell... Their ATIS is on some weird freq in the 300mhz range, but tune in all the same. Remember with air traffic you need to change the band to AM or it will not be heard or sound distorted.

Thanks for all the help. And for the advice, I followed your suggestion Meg and got myself a MobileOne SCBASE antenna, they are a lot bigger than I expected!

Wow! What a differance, reception has gone up through the roof (slight pun?). Was getting Perth approach only and not good. (I think Pearce is basically shut down for the break) Now FESA, lots of Perth airport freq. and all clear. Very happy. :D

Again thanks.

Hi WadeH - yep, they are a big antenna! But they do work very well - I'm pleased to hear yours has improved your reception :) Happy listening!
