G'day Joe,

What sorts of things do you like to listen to - does the scanner already have an antenna and you're looking for one more suited to a particular frequency band, or did you get it antenna-less?

Has antenna, I listen to airband, and fesa the most but would use others aswell.

Ah ok - depending on your circumstances, if you can get an antenna upon the roof of your house, you'll probably get better reception than if you just have one of the little antennas that came with your scanner.

If that's not possible, then maybe a whip that's tuned for the FESA and air-band frequencies might be another choice.

I would be ok with an antenna on the roof but it needs a BNC connnector. I do not whant to mess about with connectors.

Mug, I have a SCBASE made by MobileOne on my roof at home, picks everything up really well and has BNC at the end of the cable.
SCBASE Antenna
Alternatively if you have a tin roof pick up a magnetic base with bnc, don't see many of them but I have seen a couple and get a scanning antenna.
The SCBASE I have I bought from Dick Smith.

That is perfect for what I want but the price is bit steep for my circumstances. Oh well, betta put it on the (rapidly growing) christmas list.

Provided you have a good enough antenna and close enough to a FESA repeater, you should be able to pick up anyone on the repeater network when they have the link switched on, no matter where you are. Its purely a matter of selecting the right channel nearest/ clearest to you at the time.

Like last weekend, I was coming back from up north and 56 was booming in and I could here what was happening in Secret Harbour from as far north as Cataby (60km North of Gingin).

Would've been channel 6 (Lancelin). 56 is in Pinjarra. They do share the same frequency, just different CTCSS tones.

52 would also be useful up that way...

Thanks Fastlane, my mistake lol. Wondered why I was picking up 56 far north and then at home aswell. Did not realise it was the same freq as 6 (should have looked at the sticky lol).

52 seemed to cut in an out all of the time. Even on the Brand Hwy going past the GinGin turn-off it was not as strong as channel 6. idk.

I can pick up FESA with my scanner supplied antenna but I have to sit on top of a fence. I don't really want to have to do this anymore.

A quick and dirty solution is to buy a mag base or one of those spring clip bases with 10' of cable and stick it to the roof gutter with the cable through the window. One of those cheapie stainless steel whips will do. Even and old HF CB antenna.

I have a modified coax cable that goes from the BNC antenna connector on my hand held to an 'N' type TV antenna connector, plugged in to the TV antenna socket in the wall. Completely un-orthodox i know, but works fine for 6AR/6IP and 6DS

No, you're not imagining it ... someone HAS been playing around with moving posts :)

The conversation on a new antenna for Mug in "Introduce yourself" was getting pretty in-depth so I decided to explore the new moderator control panel and play with the "split posts" function :P

No better way to learn where everything is in the new version of the board than to jump right in and tinker!!!

Belling Lee (IEC 162-2) not N type but anyway... TV antenna worked for me as well as a starter. It would work a lot better if the antenna was rotated 90° so the elements are up and down. Not so good for TV :)
