You'll find it's because the OIC usually travels in the passenger seat of the pumper as he can chat to more crew (ie organise) about the incident before they arrive.

Plus then the 2 trucks arrive at the same time, and the light tanker is at an incident scene with little protection and little that they can do without the jaws from the pump or pressure boost from the pump.

That and you have the added advantage that people usually *do* get out of the way when a large truck is barrelling down at them. Not so lucky when zipping about in a Light Tanker on your own..

Its also to do with visibilty,ie if u see a big red pump with 30 LEDs and roof beacons comin towards an intersection(its not hard to miss if ur paying attention) and ive always known froma young age that ther wil always be a small one following it ie light tanker,u have to be careful tho coz the pump will brake alot better then the taker

also in regards to the big truck being quicker then a small one?lol thats not necisarily the case when ur following a 2.4,3.4,4.4 lol ask ppl here thatve gone firecall behind one.

I think it all comes down to safety as most MP HP can out break an LT and due to visability issues.
