There will be a newcomer to peak hour on the Kwinana Freeway this morning as the first ever train to travel from Perth to Mandurah hurtles along the State’s new railway line.
The single engine and carriage train will not be carrying passengers but rather is a test run for the $1.66 billion railway line which has been at the centre of much political argy-bargy since construction started two years ago.
The train was poised early this morning, ready to take its maiden journey on the Narrows Bridge. It was scheduled to depart at 7.30am, and will slowly head towards Rockingham.
There is no official opening date set for the rail line and speculation is rife on when Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan will make an announcement.
On the new MetroRail homepage it is listed only as “2007â€
