Passing through the burbs today I was confronted by a very interesting sight.
It seems some one has decided to install what looks like 2 PERMENANT ARGUS/Video traffic survailance cameras at the rail crossing, facing both ways.
The units look like very pricey bits of gear, I wonder which govt dept paid for these new toys.
They are def not normal TCL cameras and the Magic Eye box sticks out like the preverbials...
So I put it to the members of this forum....Any one know anything bout this at all..??
Ive not heard any media releases on these units..
And silly me I should have got some pics for your entertainment...!!
Kelvin Road train crossing..Interesting sight!

From an SES unit member who's involved with the camera's. He's mentioned a couple of times they may be integrating "red light" cameras at train intersections. It'd be a slightly different setup to TCL, but the ARGUS needs to be manned.

Interesting news Tyranus.
I heard something similar a while back but didnt think anything of it.
On the Fixed location Argus/Plate Recog systems, Im sure with technology it could be set to broadcast a lookout to be kept for/vehicle seen it the vecinty, Ie stolen vehicle/VOI via email to base station live,
Which would be a massive tool for the beat boys.
Still interested into which dept's budget the new toys come out of ??

they had somthing similar on police files unlocked last night , in england they have 1000's of cameras which work as a normal camera plus the can monitor traffic with the unusual function of beeing able to read rego plates and cross check them , then if the car comes up it can follow the car movements and notifys the radio base so they can send it out as a job to the guys on the road ,,,, very complex

interesting sighting
this is from the news in April 2007:
Road safety experts have dismissed criticism of a plan to install digital camera's at railway crossing's, to catch and fine drivers who try to outrun trains. The State Government has decided to spend $500 000 installing six cameras at crossings around Perth. The camera's will photograph drivers who ignore warning signals, in an effort to improve driver behaviour.

LOL; beaten to the punch
I took a closer look at the cameras - they appear to be manufactured by Redflex Traffic Systems.
Most probably rail crossing enforcement, trying to catch idiots who hoon across as the gates are lowering.
