History of scanning

Post by Steve »

Here's something: who in the group's been scanning the longest?

Let me 'open the bidding': I can remember when the police used 79mhz VHF: one channel (ch5) for northside, one (ch2) for southside, one for Warwick (ch7) and one for Freo (ch3).

Well I'm glad to report I don't go back that far!

I got my first scanner circa 1986. The Police Service was utilising 79mhz but gradually moving to UHF: the Perth city beat coppers for example used 468.425 for a long time on (I think) two-channel hand-helds before the full 64 channel system was rolled out. They operated the two systems simultaneously for many months.

The 79mhz system utilised 20 channels: 1'a' to 10'a' and 1'b' to 10'b'. A stainless steel whip about a metre high gave away a lot of unmarked police cars back then!

The conversion to UHF was completed in about 1989.
