Scanner questions / help

Post by Cyclops »

G'day people,

Had my scanner (UBC 780 XLT) for a couple of years now....and have never really used it...sorry!

Hoping someone can point me in the direction of some SIMPLE and CLEAR instructions on setting up trunk and data functions. I understand you can download weather data and things like that?

Anyway as you can see I know nothing and would like lots of help.

Thanks in advance.

Anything here help? http://users.chariot.net.au/~mattb/scan/ubc780.htm

or here: http://www.bc780xlt.com/

Unfortunately, I think you need very specific frequencies for the control channel etc which I haven't seen published for Perth, anywhere. (Obviously the South Australian GRN channels on that page won't work here)

Otherwise you'd have to find them yourself going through the list of the 800Mhz trunking channels that have been posted here.

As far as downloading weather data, with some special computer decoding software and probably a custom outdoor antenna you can receive weather satellites. This describes a kit receiver (don't need the kit, the scanner can do that - good info at the beginning of the article) http://www.siliconchip.com.au/cms/A_30849/article.html and this is a good overview http://www.tech-pro.net/g4ilo/wxsats.html

Thanks for the reply and info. Will have a read of it.

Just to clarify, I know nothing about this hobby - I just wanted pick up the emergency bands. I had a cash windfall and decided to buy a good scanner instead of a cheap one. My thought was that one day I might get into it properly.

Is there much to listen to in Perth? Specifically I am in Willetton.

I realise that the scanner I brought is severe overkill for what I wanted, but I had money at the time and always buy better than I think I need - usually save time and money in the long run.
