damn it... again. (please help!)

I have an Uniden Bearcat UBC60XLT Scanning Receiver from 1975. The year 1975. It has gone stupid a few times, but i have fixed it. It still has minor problems that I can't fix, but i can work around those. There is now i big problem. When I enter a frequency into the keypad, press "E", then it just displays the letter on the one-didgit LCD screen. It's not meant to do this. (It covers the band I am trying to receive (8 Band).) When it's working properly, you punch in a freq (eg. 123.4567) you press E, for enter. There are buttons on the side, wich I don't really understand. Unfortunately, the .PDF file does not work, and the origional booklet has gone browny/yellow. It is just a bit out of warranty.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
