Antenna question

Hey guys,
Firstly ill say my knowledge of scanning is not much and ive only recently developed an interest so im still trying to grasp how the whole thing works.
Ive got a Uniden ubc355xlt and i have attached just above the gutter on my roof a bandspanner 1050mm antenna, since i hooked it up i have been able to pick up much more than before (was using bit of wire with window sticking things that came with it) some of its not very strong. i have read about people using a pole or something and was wondering if i was to get a longer cable and a mast and put my antenna on top of that, would that greatly improve what i can receive and the strength of the receiving audio?
cheers!

Adding cable can add loss to the signal, but the gain in antenna position usually outweighs that.

Only thing I can add to to just give it a try, the higher the antenna is the better. Don't expect it to be greatly improved depending on your location if you have hills around you and such.

With the kind of frequencies you'll be scanning, more antenna height and gain will always win, even with average quality coax.
