Hi people great forum so i bought a Uniden 73xlt and i was thinking about buying a better aerial

And connecting it to a squid pole above the house just wondering whether it will be worth it.

That antenna is designed to mount on a windscreen or window the same way a car mobile phone antenna works. You'd probably be better off with a standard mount or an antenna that can be hanged (like a SCBASE) A squidpole will give you good height but the end pieces might be a bit thin for hanging a SCBASE. You could just remove the last section or two I guess.
As an alternative for hanging from a squidpole, you could run a coax up the pole and remove the last 500-1000mm of shielding. The centre conductor would act as the antenna.

I've had nothing but bad luck with on-glass antennas. They're really a compromise antenna for when you absolutely, positively can't use anything else. (Beats me why the Police use them on their marked vehicles)

As a compromise antenna, they have performance to match.

Thanks people i'm going to go with a Diamond RH 799 yeah i was thinking about that with the squid pole i will remove a couple of sections should still give me 3-4 meters to play with then run the RG58 cable down a unused chimney and if i dont get better reception i'll eat my own hat have to buy one first .

The RH 799 is designed to connect straight onto the radio and probably won't be weather proof
