UBC 57xlt antenna

Post by Pty »

Guys i've just inherited my old man's uniden 57xlt but he has lost the antenna. Does anyone know if i can order a new one or buy one that screw directly in? I'm planning on selling it cheap to a mate.

cheers

Ooops - sorry it isn't BNC, is it SMA? An adapter SMA->BNC and as below?

Is it a BNC connector? If so, you should be able to grab a scanner antenna from (for example) MobileOne for it.

If its a normal BNC connector then yes you can purchase a scanducky from Dick Smith part code D4433.

WACB in East Perth sold me an adapter for that radio a few years back so i could use a bnc connection... its not a perfect fit but it does the job ok. Maybe give them a go?

According to one hit on google, it is an SMA connector. You can get adaptors for it or you can buy antennae with SMA. If you get an adaptor to BNC then you can use any regular BNC antenna but it might not be quite as rugged as an SMA antenna.

I don't think it's an sma connection but it does appear to be about the same size. The 57xlt has a female thread whereas my R5 has a male sma thread on it. The 57xlt's antenna has a male thread...

I've been searching for a while and i can't find any 57xlt antenna specifications anywhere  #-o

WACB have an extraordinary range of adapters - if you can drop in there with it, bet he can find you one. SMA seems to have quite a few variations, bet it's one of them.

Unfortunately i live too far away, but i might give them a call. I've tried calling DSE where it was bought from and they don't supply spare parts to discontinued products. I called uniden but was on hold for far too long. I have emailed them but we'll see how long it takes for a reply.

I found this: http://warsug.info/viewtopic.php?f=12&t ... =ubc+57xlt
1x Socket Banana plain 4mm economical model. 125vac. (50c at dick smiths)
Now if you screw this into the the UBC57xlt antenna jack, you will see that it fits perfectly as it is the same size and everything to the screw in the antenna
might have to give this a go if i have no luck.

Update :)

I decided to have a go at making the BNC adapter as in the above link.

I went to Jaycar today and bought a $0.50 banana socket and a $3.50 male RCA to female BNC adaptor. I soldered it together in about 5 minutes, added some heatshrink i had lying around. I have a nice butane soldering iron so i was able to control the heat and use a good iron end piece to help make it easier. It's not extremely strong, but it'll do just fine as there's not much movement in it. Here's the finished product:

I added my 3db uhf Laser handheld antenna and it's pulling in the local constabulary very loud and clear. It works great! All i need to do now is find a CHEAP bnc uhf/scanner whip for it. I ain't giving away my laser antenna anytime soon ;)
