I personally have a Bearcat... something or other  200 Channel. Powered by cigarette lighter.

Then connected via coax (with a base) into a Z type bracket on the boot with a "Bandspanner" antenna covering the receive range of 27-1300MHz (antenna spec).

I have a Uniden UBC-T9 Scanner installed in my ute. DIN size made it easy to fit under the CD player in the Hiulx. Have fitted an external speaker (cheepie from DSE). 250 Channel, Close Call, Preset Fire, Ambulance and Police (Thats handy, not) and Marine, UHF and Aviation Bands. I have a mobile one antenna fitted that is mounted on the Bull Bar. Mainly use for FESA in southern suburbs, but picks up well considering cost around 450 all up. Can pick up 27meg marine transmissions from Freo and Mandurah in Port Kennedy.

Also have a handheld Uniden 93XLT in the car. When it is in there, have another antenna that is mounted on the bull bar that connects to it, does not quite pick up furthur off transmissions as well, but works well close when I want to listen to 2 stations at once (ie fires, listen to 6AR/IP and fireground channel if in range).

Also have a 40 Channel Uniden UHF - Cant remeber the model but its about 5 years old. Small 50cm steel whip and get good transmission range from Rockingham to Freo on simplex channels.

I've gone for a combo scanner and amateur radio handheld in the car. Basically, one of the Yaesu VX series handhelds which has very wideband receive on it.

I've got a Diamond SG7200 antenna mounted on the bonnet of the ute which connects to it - can use this to transmit on 2m and 70cm, as well as receiving, in my case, mainly the fire channels (6IP, local channel and simplex fireground channels if they're closeby).

The handheld is just on one of those multipurpose windscreen mounted holders (got it from Harvey Norman I think).

I have a Realistic old model 200 channel Pro 2022 Base set in the office (Mains Power) . with a CABase antenea 20 ft high on the peak of the roof, can receive south of Mandurah to GinGin to Northam, on Fesa Channels and Aviation.

In the Vehicle I have a Uniden hand held UBC72XLT mounted with a VHF/UHF metre high Antenea mounted on the Bull Bar, powered by Cig Lighter transformer, can receive All VHF Aviation Frequencies inc Jandakot, Melbourne relay, to Pearce Center.

Would like to obtain another second hand Base set with 200 Channels or more.

3 radios but no actual scanner! A Yaesu FT-8900 (TX on 10m, 6m, 2m & 70cm amateur FM), Philips PRM8041 (UHF CB) and a Philips FM92 for FESA listening.

Front of the car on the passenger side is a steel whip for FESA, http://vk6hgr.echidna.id.au/images/car_antenna3.jpg Opposite that is a 1/4 6m 5/8 2m whip. On the back, I've used a couple of these on the boot lip with a Mobile One CD433 for 70cm and a similar one for UHF CB. - http://vk6hgr.echidna.id.au/images/car_antenna4.jpg

All the remote units sit in a subwoofer box in the boot, with all the cables etc going through some conduit.

The hardest part for a car install is getting cables through the firewall at the front and through the chassis generally. The second hardest part is finding a place for the radio and/or remote head on a modern car that has no room, and in my case, doing it without drilling any visible holes:

I'll have to take some more up to date pics...

Icom IC-208H (ham 2m & 70cm, remote head) but receives most of the spectrum from air-band up. Scan speed is very good. Connected to a brand new ham 6m/2m/70cm antenna mounted on the rear support bar of my ute. The bar is a fairly good ground plane. I only just installed the radio a few days ago and had my first QSO in it's new location tonight with some guy VK6FNRD :-)

G'day Mr. G
Just wondering how your quest is going thus far, whether you've committed and started setting it up, or whether you're trying to convince the other half it'll be fun :). Keep us updated, you know where to look if you need a hand!

You're a brave man gk.. I wouldn't go near my car with a drill or radio (esp considering how much it cost! :? )

Bah humbug, Falcons are fairly easy to install radio gear into. At least it was for mine.

Falcons and Commodores are usually easy to install radio gear into, remote head gear helps, local stuff is limiting....

I love landcruisers (troopies), so many mounting options :D

Ahh its only a ford of coarse you can take to it with a drill the car will be Found On Rubbish Dump soon any way.

I have a 93XLT hand held which i setup to go into the car via a fly lead to got to a mobile one antenna mounted on the bull bar of my holden. Then out of the head phone jack i have ran just a normal cb car speaker with a 180w mini car amp to boost the volume which i found on ebay for $15.00 and now the she cranks. Both the amp and my car charger a pluged into a double adapter 12V cig lighter.

The setup i have is great because of the travelling i do in the car i can listen no problems in there but once i get to site and still want to listen i disconect the ariel, chager and amp attach my scan ducky ariel and away i go.
