Looking for my first scanner...

Post by mstknvt »

Hey all.
First time reader, first time poster.

I'm in north perth, and looking for a handheld scanner that does police, ambos, fire, events (red bull air race etc). What would you guys recommend? I'm looking at about a $300 budget.

Would something like this do the trick?

Thanks :)

Hi Mstknvt.

The most critical thing about receiving good signals isn't the scanner itself, it's the antenna you use. The antenna that comes with most scanners is terrible and will give disappointing results. For base station use, an outdoor antenna is essential.

I've had good success with MobileOne antennas. Their SCBASE and SCABASE antennas are good for a home base:

I use the Scantenna for my car, and have found it much better than the original antenna... seem to have alot of trouble receiving transmissions from cars, but not from the station when i am inside usin the original antenna.

Thanks for the recommendations re antenna .... however what about a scanner? Any recommendations there? Still deciding between an in-car scanner and a handheld scanner.... any recommendations with a $300 budget?

A digital scanner won't work on the new police system. Not at all.
