How to increase scanner radius

Did anybody else watch braniac last night on channel 10 at 2030? They worked out how to improve the radius of a mobile phone and i wonder if we could apply the same theory, but dont know how to work it out like they did.
Does anybody know how to make a base antenna?

ive installed a few 2 way base stations. Mobile phone ones wouldnt be too different. u just need the right antenna.
what did they do on brainiac?
