Looking for an aviation scanner - need a boredom buster

Hey guys, I'm living in Broome now and well there's one police freq up here and as you can imagine, not a lot happens so I'm looking for a cheap or the cheapest aviation scanner around at the moment.

Anyone got any suggestions cause I wouldn't know the first place to start!

Basically any scanner that receives the frequencies 108-136 MHz (or 118-136 MHz: 108-118 MHZ is for navigation and not communications).

The little Uniden 72xlt and 92xlt both do this, and a lot of the old Realistic handhelds did as well - you can often get one cheaply at a Cash Converters or on Ebay.

Have a look at the online version of the 'Enroute Supplement Australia' on the Airservices Australia website and you'll find the frequencies used in Broome.

Gday Brett the Maycom AR-108 is a good airband only receiver at around $170 it does a good job for the price. I have a Uniden 92xlt and that does a great job of the airband as well as allowing me to listen to all the other stuff too... VHF Marine , Hotel operations , local government etc.

For a good laugh try the Broome taxis frequency... some of the late night calls are just hilarious .. 158.3MHz

I just had a quick look and if you go to that link and add Broome to any SITES where any detail matches , you will get 98 hits of registered radio sites in Broome. Good luck with that mate.....enjoy.

hey Always RX will those airline frequencies work here in Perth or just in Broome.As i'm chasing the Jetstar and Virgin frequencies for Perth.

131.150 is Virgin's company frequency in Perth. I think it's linked in to their UHF system on the ground, too.

Jetstar on 136.125 is an interesting one: the aviation band was extended a few years ago to go to 138 MHz instead of 136 MHz, so modern aircraft would be able to use it - not all scanners though - many finish at 136 MHz.

Gday Doogues , those freq`s are statewide and in some cases nationwide for the airlines. If you do a search of Perth Airport or Redcliffe in the ACMA database (link in my last post) you will also find these and quite a few more local operations as well. I would do it for you but the six coronas i just drank simply wont allow it right now. But here is a couple more off the top of my head..

129.6MHz RFDS Ops
129.35MHz Singops ( Singapore Airlines Flying School )
130.65MHz Heliwest

Oh and what you are saying about the 136+ freq range is very true steve and most older scanners wont be capable..although it can be entered in my 2yr old Uniden...and come to think of it I had no idea J* actually flew to Broome. I am pretty sure Qantas AirOps links to the UHF 463.000MHz ground ops channel too...I guess so all the ramprats can stay in the loop.

I saw the Heliwest charter chopper at Burswood today and was wondering what other freqs they monitor. I see you have put 130.650 MHz on your post, and I guess they would have at least 2 VHF-Air transceivers on board, but it looked like a unity-gain UHF antenna on the tail as well. Do they have UHFCB for comms to theBurswood base as well as Trinity or is it something else?

The extra radios fitted in choppers often relate to other contract work the chopper is used for. Heli West have a Western Power powerline inspection contract so it may relate to that, or the aircraft might spend part of the year doing mustering work so it might be for that.
