Here is a complete low down on the Uniden BearCat 57xlt

The UBC57xlt is a 20 channel programmable hand held scanner covering 8 bands and the frequency range of
66-88 MHz
137-174 MHz
406-512 MHz

allowing you to pick up police, fire, ambulance, business/industrial radio, utility, land transportation ( eg trucking firms, buses, taxis, tow trucks), railroads, marine and "ham" radio.

It has a instant police channel search meaning that all police channels are already programmed into the scanner.

It has channel lockout, full frequency display, priority channel scanning, manual channel access, memory back up, auto squelch, pre set 2 sec delay, lcd back light and keypad lock.

It takes 4 AA batteries

Pros
The instant police channel search at the press of a button
Simplicity- this is definately the best scanner for beginners in my opinion
Covers your basic frequencies - police fire and ambulance
Doesnt chew through the batteries


Cons-
Screw in antenna - most antennas are BNC type
Batteries - no chargable battery pack
Availability - good luck finding a retail that sells them new
Aviation- cant pick it up

Con solutions
Make a bnc adaptor so you can use any antenna (ill have a DIY soon)
Rechargables- Save you a stack of money
Ebay- They usually have a UBC57xlt on ebay

If you buy one on ebay, dont pay any more than $120 max because they were $150 brand new 2 years ago.
