New-B recommendations and help.

Hey guys, im looking for a scanner to listen in on Firies and supporting aircraft (TX disabled). i also live in the shadow of a RAAf base so that would be cool too! and access to the UHF band as a TX/RX unit... im not sure this is entirely possible? can any one make any recommendations, or point me in the right direction for some information. iv being trying to find as much info as i can but the internet has failed me on this one.
im prepared to go buy a proper radio (icom, Tait etc) and it will probably end up mounted in my ute.
