Looks like this hasn't been used for a year but here's hoping
About to buy a handheld scanner mainly for the purpose of listening in on, but not exclusively, aviation.
Any recommendations for a good or better quality unit?
I hope I am not being a nuicance asking these questions.
I have just received my uniden 130XLT handheld scanner.
Not getting anything from any of the following
perth tower (120.500)
perth ATIS (123.800)
perth ground (121.700)
Is it because
a) the unit operates on line of sight for analogue
b) my location is too far from the source (I live in Scarborough)
c) the aerial is not powerful enough
d) some other reason
Please bear in mind I am new to this so any assistance is gratefully welcomed.
Cheers
We are here to learn and get advise so don't worry about that.
It's probably location, if you were near the top of a hill it might be ok but yes its very line of sight. Go for a drive/walk to the nearest/tallest hill and try. ATIS is a good one to test (if you can get it) since its continuous. Sometimes if you can't get tower or approach or such you might only hear the aircraft and not the ground/control tower side of things again due to line of sight.
