Strange - I'm in an office in Perth next to a window and have no problem picking up 6IP and the area channels. Can't get simplex, but that's understandable... I've heard of buildings where the spacing of the metal frame was such that it blocked particular frequencies - the only suggestion I could gi...

Best channel I've found for the water bombers is channel 50 - 77.2000 And yes, alot of the fireground chat is simplex and difficult to pick up (with my handheld scanner at any rate) - even from only a few kms away.. Dang trees! It depends what area you're in, but the 6IP/6AR channels (which are to/f...

Western Power
Hi all I don't suppose anyone knows if Western Power use radios and if so, what frequencies in the Perth hills area - Mundaring/Gidgegannup/Chidlow ? Our power goes out pretty frequently, and I've always wondered what the techs are saying when they come out to repair and what the faults actually are...

Re: good antenna set for under 100.
Make sure you dont get something that is low-band VHF only though, because you'll have to throw it out in a few years - FESA should have a new radio network by then, using UHF and high-band VHF instead.. I've heard the rumors on that...of course it may be longer till they move the volunteers radio ...

Re: ESL..
Think about things in these terms - there are some 760 volunteer bush fire brigades ALONE across this state. Many of these have not been well funded in the past when the responsibility lay with local government - some local govts and communities simply couldnt afford it. Now with the ESL, FESA is h...

With regards to the FESA side of things, I think you'll find where stations are being closed, it is simply to relocate the resources to a more suitable position. The population in areas such as Osborne Park and Balcatta isnt in a phase of huge growth, however, since those stations were built, thing...

Re: good antenna set for under 100.
A normal whip antenna is meant to be bolted to a car or other flat metal surface (pergola roof...?) Just curious - does it have to be attached to a *flat* metal surface? Our verandah roof is metal, but at a bit of an angle. I'm more interested in VHF for listening to the fire stuff (I'm in one of t...
