Re: DFES digital

I have seen, felt, and even played with the radios in question. They are not going to replace the current radios we have, they are for specialist and complex firefighting operations in specific circumstances. That is all I am willing to talk about on a public forum.

Re: DFES moving away from radio?

I certainly can't see the 6AR/IP net going down any time soon, even for CFRS. It's a low tech network - it works, it's more reliable than most digital services/systems. CFRS and VFRS may switch to other options for routine messages and status updates, but at the end of the day, most of the "int...

Re: Baofeng DM-1701 first impressions

Once CHIRP supports it, I'll be picking one up. Is there any way to lock out the transmit function on this? I tend to shy away from questionably legal radios unless I can either find a way to lock out the VFO or disable/desolder the TX amp IC.

Hi, they were most likely using Vertex Standard VX870 WAERN handhelds.

We use Yellow heatshrink to indicate VHF models, and white heatshrink to indicate UHF models.

Re: Blackspots force Vic firies to suspend parts of Telstra radio network

Unless there is a tactical requirement for Digital + Encryption, I feel a lot safer using analogue radios - they work, and they have better fringe coverage than digital ever will.

Re: Digital Decoder software

Unless you were decoding FSK based data like rtty, or stuff like POCSAG, you would need to use the discriminator output on your scanner to get the best chances of decoding anything. I only really know of fldigi, minimodem, and Digital Radio Mondiale software.

Re: Public Transport Frequencies and Links

I found a cheap baofeng uv-5r would that be okay ? I would say that it's not advised to own one from a legal standpoint without a license. But many, many people DO own them without a license, and not much happens to them enforcement wise if they just use them as receivers with the transmit capabili...

Re: Uniden SDS100

Kinda crummy they make you pay for these options: :(
MotoTRBO Capacity + and Connect +**
DMR Tier III**
Hytera XPT**
Single-Channel DMR**
NXDN 4800 and 9600**
EDACS ProVoice**
Better off getting a hackRF and a raspberry pi and making a rugged receiver out of that.

Re: News: Years After Sept. 11, Critical Incidents Still Overload Emergency Radios

Interesting.

Too many users on analog repeaters and simplex causes problems, but once everyone shuts up they instantly recover.

This is why I support the use of analog radio for regular comms, and having MDTs and mobiles on emergency spectrum for sensitive information.

Re: Painting ants

Painting ants usually just pisses them off. It also leaves a hell of a mess

In all seriousness though, I've had luck with painting my vehicle's UHF antennas using fiddly bits black gloss spray paint. I now have black antennas, not shiny stainless steel antennas.

Going Straight to Standard. How can I brush up on my knowledge before jumping into a course?

After discussions with people at the SES Comms Support Unit, I've decided to skip foundation and go straight for a standard license. I'm bored with just listening to Amateur comms or using 27Mhz SSB/477Mhz UHFCB and want to start getting involved with the fun stuff that amateur radio gives us. After...
