Just personal thoughts, with the advent of technologies over CB (like Zello), typical use of CB with decent etiquette to me is a thing of the past. It's really only used for local simplex stuff. The ones listed in the DFES list are the correct ones (channels 5xx and 6xx).

Shift numbers. They call out when leaving the yard generally, then when out of the yard the call sign is the train number (as in route number).

I think it will be a stretch to find a product that does that. All the UHF CB's I've seen only have hardware to receive extra stuff in 450-500Mhz'ish. While two in one single vehicle units do exist they are not type approved for CB and you'll need a license to own etc etc. I feel your pain having a ...

I think you'll need to see the bigger picture. Having LTE to trains and devices means you can more connectivity and uses plus future proofing.

My understanding is that if it's LTE, it's similar to a mobile phone network which of course is not accessible by anyone without the authentication hardware.

It seems to have started about 1547. I've checked all the ones I can think of north of the river with a roof mounted antenna and nothing is transmitting up here (very quick check though).
