I use these custom antennas for Airband only from 2 australian companies POLAR-214A Dipole/RFI-GP3 groundplane and these antennas are what the civil aviation authorities use in australia & other countries around the world and they dont need to be high due to the gain they have and i live about 8...

I got the Icom-PCR1500 & the R2500 and are excellent receivers to use and with a good antenna you will enjoy receiving signals with these radios,i use the Icom-AH7000 discone with both radios.

I bought the 996 about a year ago but i havent used it much at all prefer to use the 780 and the Yaesu-VR5000.

There is a few other options like the AOR-8600MK2 and its wide band coverage receiver and later on you can add the APCO-25 DIGITAL DECODING BOARD.I do have the radios that you mentioned plus the AOR-8600MK2 but at the end of the day it depends what you want to listen too.

My employment is not the issue i got asked a question about antennas and i answered it and i do take my hobby very serious thats why i have all those radios and a few more and antennas to cover all the bands with all my antennas and i do monitor the Airbands more than any other band.

I got 3 Rfi-GP3 and they are a commercial antennas that is used by the civil avaition authorities and its much better than the Diamond and i also use the Polar dipole for the airbands but i havent put it up.

The Alinco,Aor,Icom,Yaesu have what they call a vfo and you can enter a frequency or 2 and it does not go on the memory channels some have an VFO A/B which comes in handy because you can search a band from the vfo.
