This radio is not authorised as a CB in Australia. No amount of programming or wand-waving will change that. I also disagree with the first line of your first post.

This is not a CB. It is not legal to use it on CB frequencies.

I read an article where tactical forces prefer to use UHF when they are clearing buildings because the signal punches through walls better. I'm wondering if smoke and vapour might be much the same.

I don't believe that radio is capable of CTCSS. It's not in the spec sheet I have.

The VHF radios around one fifty/one sixty MHz are having this problem? Do the 78MHz radios do better under the same conditions?

Any idea why the new radios systems are affected by smoke and water vapour but not the old systems? Does it get into the radios?

I stopped at Cocklebiddy on the Nullarbor one summer evening. I couldn't find a spot on the FM band that was empty. Some frequencies had multiple stations. Cocklebiddy is about 1100 km from Perth! I had a convo with someone in Northampton about 480 km away on 146.675 MHz. Normally I would get 25-40 km.
The same effect can be seen on TV and FM broadcast as well.
