When did Police switch to encrypted digital ?

I just bought my scanner recently and I realise that WAPOL and St John Ambulance have gone digitally encrypted. Do I missed out a lot of the excitement ? I should have bought it a long time ago I always procrastinated before.

@Spartacus : Wow, that's really interesting ! So the old radio has more frequency coverage then the modern one. May be something to do with the sound quality ? Or may be they cannot do the FM Stereo with Narrowband ? I have to reasearch on that. Thank's anyway for the post.
