troubles with wireless and voip

hey

i have a billion BiPac 741VGP router with wireless and voip

when someone uses voip or we have a call, the wireless network stops.
can someone tell me why it does this and help me stop it from doing this

Do you have a cordless phone hooked up to it?

Might be a QoS issue..what speed is your internet?

Yeah Blinky that was my first thought but then I saw fastlane's suggestion and my guess is that it's that.

my nets speed here is between 3.5mbps - 6mbps

Still, an answer to both the above questions would help

Wifi uses the 2.1ghz band which is shared by many other devices including some cordless phones. Have a look what frequency your phone operates on.

If the cordless phone base for example is sitting on the desk next to your wireless router, get it as far away as you can! Try another phone point in the house for the cordless (don't forget the ADSL filter) or if you don't have another point then buy yourself a 20m telephone extension lead and whack the phone on to the end of that.

Just out of curiosity, who is your ISP, VoIP provider and what speed is your internet connection?

sorry bonez 2.4GHz wrong key I think.

However the rest of what the man said is correct, the most common wireless b and g which can get up to 54mbps are on the 2.4GHz band. A lot of the stock standard cordless phones are 2.4GHz as well. It is quite common for the cordless phones to play havoc on the wireless especially if the 2 are next to each other. Other equipment that can interfere with your wireless: Microwaves, TV's, Baby monitors etc as well as the usual walls etc.
Things to try:
1)cord phone - if you still have one
2) if you can plug your computer into the router with a cable
If you try one of these and get a call and it doesn't drop out then it proves it was the wireless.
If it does drop out then you've got funky stuff happening.
So if it's the cordless phone and wireless, then what?
Well if you're really wanting to keep your phone cordless you can get either a 1.8GHz or a 5.8GHz cordless phone. Bear in mind that if you're thinking of getting Wireless n which is in the finishing stages of development if it hasn't been finished yet operates on 5.8GHz, no computer wi-fi standards work on 1.8GHz so you'll be safe there.

yep my phone is 2.4ghz so yeah i will have to relocate my phone away from router (cant connect my laptop via cable, as yeah my laptop goes all around the house, so i will need a 50m cable LOL:) ), may be a bit tricky as i am using VOIP.

my internet provider is iinet naked DSL. (no line rental YAY $25 in my pocket) and i am meant to get 24mbps. but yeah my phone lines in my house are not good. working to get that problem fixed, i should be able to get at least 10 - 15mbps, instead of 5mbps

nah there's too many dependencies when it comes to all that, line quality within the house, to and from the exchange, distance from the exchange other users in your area that have also opted for the high throughput. Speed of the webservers delivering your content. etc will affect the performance.
Try moving the phone, but to be honest I don't know how much of a difference it will make, try maybe changing the chanel on your wireless, there's 8 channels if I remember correctly, try setting it to something like 4 or 5 this may improve it a bit. Certainly where you have multiple wireless networks in a small area, having yours on a different channel can make a big difference.

yea good idea to play around with the channels, could offset just enough for the phone to work.
secondly may swing away from a voip box and analogue phone. Siemens do a good cordless voip phone, should work a treat. you could even try a wireless a/b/g phone. I think netgear make one, it connects straight to the wireless network.

i can find out exact models and the like if your keen.

another option possibly is to set the QOS settings in your router. Voip generally needs alot of bandwidth to establish a call then throttles right back. if your computer is torrenting and your trying to make a call without QOS priority to the phone then you will struggle.

hopefully something here made some sense....does in my head anyways.
