My gut reaction is, I don't think it's a brilliant idea.
The police are there to uphold the law "without fear or favour" - and once the cars start carrying advertising, I just have this feeling that it opens them up to accusations (even baseless ones) that favouritism is being shown towards their "sponsors".
But I'll have to give it some more thought before I come to a definite opinion, all this is very much off the top of my head so far ...

From the face of it, it seems that getting extra funding for a much needed service just by slapping a couple of stickers on a car is win win.
But as Doug has said favouritism could come into play, depending on who the sponsor is (with the BNE airport case I'm guessing you have AFP there anyway so favouritism isn't a big issue, I think its when you get something more obscure pushed out by the advertising company's. Think 'Need a lawyer, call 1800 xxx xxx on the side of the car )

Yes - I mean there's probably sponsorship on some WA police vehicles, the ones used for CrimeStoppers or some community policing type roles - to be honest I can't think whether I've seen any or not.yorky wrote:From the face of it, it seems that getting extra funding for a much needed service just by slapping a couple of stickers on a car is win win.

In that situation, I don't see it being a big issue. But the regular "operational" police cars, I'd rather see them advertising-free. It's not the matter of their being any bias, it's the matter that there could be the perception of bias from some quarters. And in a way, that's worse the the real thing. After all, how do you defend yourself from malicious rumour and innuendo?

I saw an AFL team sticker on the rear window of an unmarked car a few weeks ago...does that count as advertising??

Uhm.. being taken a bit out of context I think.. From reading the article, it sounds like a logo is going to be on the Crimestoppers-advertising sticker on the vehicles. Not like a huge sponsors logo across the door or bonnet.... The sponsorship isn't for the 'police cars' as Gav eluded in his first post.. !

Fastlane I read it and it actually appears confusing because in places it appears as you say to probably be only on Crime stoppers marked cars. However the article also says:
Unless it's just badly worded. But the way I see it the Police in general support Crime stoppers and vice versa hence Crime Stoppers may have been able to make the deal to have all police cars have bumper sticker type stickers on the cars.article wrote:POLICE cars throughout Queensland will carry Brisbane Airport Corporation logos as part of a ground-breaking sponsorship deal.
As part of a $100,000 sponsorship deal with Crime Stoppers Queensland, the BAC name and symbol will be carried on all police vehicles throughout the state.
