'Argus' ANPR System: Spotted (w/ Pics)!

Spotted this operating in North Perth this afternoon - appears to be the new 'Argus' Automated Number Plate Recognition system that WAPOL were trialling late last year.

The camera is hooked up to a laptop, which locates the number plate on the car and runs it through a database. If the plate shows up as unlicensed, or if the officer on foot spots something, then they radio down the road to another team who pull the car over.

The laptop is a Panasonic Toughbook (indestructible little unit), which is hooked up to a Pips Technology P362 APNR Camera. Interestingly, the tripod is a Manfrotto 190B, which is simply a mid-range camera tripod :)

Very slick setup - spent a few minutes chatting with the officers who were operating it, who were very jovial and didn't seem to mind the camera with the big lens that I was carrying ;-)

Anyone else spotted this system in operation?

I work with Brad, and alerted him to the fact that they were down the road. Ironically, it was a day prior that he received his new lense setup for his camera.

Happy to see his new setup was put to good use ;)

They've been in North Perth and Osborne Park the last few days pulling a heap of cars over. There appears to be some sort of operation going on in this area... it's also where I saw the P plater driving ZT102 as posted in another thread.
