It was a lot closer a few years ago with the start of the CADCOM system. The government lopped the 420-430Mhz band from radio amateurs for its use. (The TETRA system they were going to use only works in a very narrow band that is free for use in Europe but is occupied here)dazla wrote:If anything they might move to digital but that is a few years away.
I'm not sure what happened, but a lot of gear was bought, a lot of money was spent, CADCOM was eventually scrapped and the police kept their existing analogue radio network.

re frequency change
I spoke to a police officer a few weeks ago and he told me that the government dont have the funding to change the frequencies from mhz to ghz,i think that the first few steps for a changeover are the change in police callsighnes and the new conrol centre at midland

as soon as mr gallop decides to pull his finger out and give the funding for it but from what we have seen with him in the past 3 years it may never happen under labor,he just does not put much money into emergencey services instead he blows millions on the mandrah train line which had already started when labor got into government, figgers!!!
I think CADCOM will still be going ahead, It has not been scrapped. As vk6hgr said, a lot of money was spent, too much. What I understand is they went way over budget and are now out of money and ended the contract with the people that were ripping them off.
But as far as I know it is just delayed... but I am sure media will be given the equipment to still be able to listen. When the cops need help with finding a bad dude who do they go to? The media. They help each other out.
Too bad for the enthusiasts though
