google seems to indicate it is a proprietary connector. You can buy a BNC adaptor for it.

Neither. Looking at photos. it looks like a 1/4 inch whitworth thread.

Icom have a BNC adapter to fit, Part No AD-98FSC, which is availabe from Andrews Communications for $39. Presumably, other Icom agents can also supply the item.

thanks for the replies. I've got the bnc adaptor already and it seems to work fine but i wanted to know if it was a reasonably common connection. I have been thinking about ordering a 3db handheld antenna for it and wondering if when ordering it from the manufacturer i could get a direct connection rather than having to order an antenna with a bnc and then having to use the bnc adaptor.

cheers

I would say it is a very uncommon connection, having seen it used only once before, over 28 years ago. However, Icoms website lists over 30 other Icom models (mainly F series radios - see below) that the adapter fits, so if you tell the supplier that the new antenna is to fit a Icom F series radio, then you should get the correct fitting.

yeah, im not sure why icom have used this connector, probably just to be difficult. GME used the TNC connector on thier 6200's and 7200's wich worked great.
