Re: A loong hoselay in the Bush (Video)
I feel sorry for whoever has to roll all those up! Back when I was over there we made watermelons/football rolls, took them back to the staging area or the station and cleaned and rolled them there. A couple of times on the big fires with long wetlines I went to we would pack the gear downhill to t...

Re: A loong hoselay in the Bush (Video)
Who doesn't love a long lay in the bush. This is a continuous shot along a long hose lay into the bush last year. Thought the whole thing may interest a few people. http://youtu.be/0FGZuhSeXgE Kuringai Chase NP? That looks very much like where I learnt to fight them, except we probably would've end...

Re: The future of selection and training...
Self funded training? Not sure I agree but there are some might suggest it brings it in line with most other careers where you need to train yourself first before getting a job? Like the military or police? I think they might be the exceptions :) Nurses, doctors, teachers not sure about ambulance, ...

Self funded training? Not sure I agree but there are some might suggest it brings it in line with most other careers where you need to train yourself first before getting a job? There's another way of looking at it, open recruitment up by relaxing the fitness standards, then close it back down by im...

Re: Social media and emergencies
Admittedly I'm not up on the details, but notice both CFA and RFS have a system that integrates their twitter and facebook accounts, so in my eyes it should be as simple as plugging the details into a form for the alert, publishing it, and then posting a tweet, something simple like "alert leve...

Re: Social media and emergencies
Just thought I'd put in my experiences from watching how social media is used over east. I've been watching the CFA and RFS facebook pages over here. www.facebook.com/cfavic and www.facebook.com/nswrfs which provide pretty good updates. I think the RFS page is probably more social media friendly, th...

Re: General fire discussions
The fire was managed by dfes as of 30 mins ago. There were lots of dec appliances arriving when we left Cheers CSU :) G Back when I was working over in the SW it was common for us to turn up to a fire (plantation brigade) and find it run by DEC and the local BFS just turning up or outnumbered 5 to ...

Re: BFB/VFRS fitness test
NSW RFS CABA operators need to pass a medical every 6 months and RAFT crews at beginning of season (I think), there are basic fitness standards for everyone else but I don't know what they are or how much they are enforced. I know there wasn't a lot of emphasis on them when I was active. I think tha...

681 is the big green and white S61? I think that is from Canada, although I know Victoria have been leasing a few of the same or a similar build the last few summers.

Re: Helitak Thread
I've been on several fires where one Aircrane or another has done segmented drops or long line drops. One of which was direct property protection in an urban area with us probably less than 10metres from the drop zone. The pilots are freaking awesome, I know in theory its possible for them to make m...

Re: General fire discussions
I read it more along the lines of Gregson providing a politically useable answer to a probably unexpected question. I thought he was basically saying FESA stands ready to do whatever the government wants it to do, at the same time as not ruling anything out, he is not taking sides with the UFU, or a...

Re: [WA] Odds nd Sods, Out nd About
great pics as always WF.
I'd put my money on a mobile workshop of sorts for a mine for the white truck. Built in access to the rear platform. Fairly sure fire services still discourage that.
