Re: Hawks at Jandakot
They're not BAe Hawks, but rather SIAI Marchetti (now Aermacchi) S211s, an Italian design. Easiest way to tell the difference between the two is where the wings are mounted; Hawks have low mounted wings, the Marchettis have high mounted wings. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/9/97/RSAF_S.211...

Re: January, February, March 2009 Sightings
From where I saw it (outside the library at Curtin University) it appeared to be a C-17. Was definitely big, grey and noisy enough to be! As it was still upwind when I saw it, and I lost sight due to trees, I'm not sure as to which direction it departed in.

We can't assist them with spares from our stores? Surely they could have some co-operation amongst allies regarding spares etc. You know something like we'll sling you a carton and the cost of a new part. The RAAF's Hercules are all based out of RAAF Richmond (near Sydney), which would be the neare...

IMO, the media has been extremely unfair on Qantas of late. The two major incidens of late (QF72 and the 747 oxygen bottle incidents) were both the first of their kind, and in both cases Qantas was the unlucky airline they happened to. As a result changes are occuring which will make the aviation in...

The 787 hasn't actually flown yet. A large number of modern 'heavy' aircraft are essentially capable of landing themselves, under certain conditions. From what I understand, these systems are capable of flying the aircraft down to around 50 feet, where the pilot will then take over. They are probabl...

pity their car sucks worse than the AFP . budget cuts means taking the patrol car down to the local sign man and saying knock me up a 5 dollar sign with change. Its probably more the fact they don't have any real need to spend the money in making their police vehicles look flashy. It's not like Nav...

You don't even need to leave Perth to see those trains. Sitting somewhere like Midland train station you're likely to see them, or drive around the Kewdale rail yards.

Perhaps one of our pilot members could enlighten us further? :) My understanding is that the old BCF extinguishers are the only type allowed to be used on board aircraft. Its certainly the only type of fire extinguisher I've ever noticed on board aircraft, and on asking more experienced pilots than...

It is a major multinational submarine rescue training exercise, called Exercise Pacific Reach. According to the link below it is being conducted in Cockburn Sound. Unfortunately the Navy aren't helping us out by providing frequencies but at least its some background info as to what's going on. http:...
