Connectors or solder?

I've been having a discussion with a mate about joining coax. Most antennas come with a length of coax already attached and often we need to lengthen it. We are at a stalemate as to whether we should use a connector or directly join them with solder? Whattyas reckon?

I wonder what Event Com transmit on the 60 MHz band? I have seen people with receivers you can buy at the cricket to hear commentry (and you can travel around Australia and it will work at each ground). It could possibly be that?
